Racehorse training is very complex! We utilize different trainers for different horses. Some of our trainers are great at developing young horses, others have a niche working with older horses. Each trainer brings a unique set of ideas and training methods to the table. A couple things all our trainers have in common - they keep an open dialogue with our manager so we can keep our owners up-to-date and they share the same values as us in terms of horse health, care and having an open barn.
At HorsePlay, we have flat rate billing each month which covers the basic care and training of our horses. Covered costs include: feed, hay, bedding, farrier, stall rent, training and basic vet care. If a horse is turned out for more than 4 consecutive days, flat rate billing changes from the training rate to the turnout rate.
As most of our horses are Ohio breds, there are additional expenses in March for our younger horses - staking! To make our horses eligible for events such as the Ohio Sires Stakes, Buckeye Stallion Series, Ohio fair racing, etc., we must nominate them in March. Then, once we actually enter into these races in the summer/fall, usually there is also an entry fee. These costs will be billed out at the percentage you own.
When horses are racing, there are additional expenses, which includes shipping to the facility, paddocking fees (someone to take care of the horse while at the races), entry fees (mentioned above in Staking), etc. These fees will be billed out at the percentage you own.
Sometimes a horse has an extended illness, needs to be castrated or injected or has other needs that are above and beyond basic vet care. These additional vet bills will be billed out at the percentage you own.
